THY KINGDOM COME - NEW MEXICO

A 24/7/365 CATHOLIC INTERCESSORY PRAYER INITIATIVE
Praying for our Churches, Cities, State, Nation - and More

This is a Catholic Intercessory Prayer Initiative.  Others are welcome to come along side us to pray.  The need for prayer is great at this time.  There is a tremendous amount of prayer power in the Catholic Church yet to be tapped and unleashed.

There are many other prayer movements going on in the Catholic Church, and in other churches as well. May this movement compliment the many prayers that are already going on. The more, the better.

HOW DOES THIS WORK?

We are asking individuals to commit to pray at a particular hour of the day, every week. For instance, if someone commits to pray Monday morning from 7am to 8am, they will pray every Monday morning at that time, until they give notice other wise.
This hour can be an hour in which a person is already praying, such as a time one has committed to pray at their parish in front of the Blessed Sacrament. (They can certainly pray at other places also.)
The goal is to have the needs of New Mexico, including the Church here, prayed for every single hour of the year. There are other needs that will be prayed for as well, as you will soon see.
The person praying will pray for the list of intentions of this initiative, but they also can pray for other intentions, as the Spirit leads, or as their experience informs them. It is not necessary to pray for the intentions word for word.

WHO CAN PRAY?
Anyone can pray. Everyone should pray. New Mexico has a great history of lay people praying and even leading when there was a tremendous priest shortage in the 1800's.

WHERE CAN I PRAY?
You can pray anywhere. At mass, in the chapel, while you walk or drive. You can pray at home at your desk, easy chair, lawn chair, or in your prayer corner. St. Paul exhorts us to "Pray without ceasing" (1 Thes. 5:17). It is good to be constantly mindful of the Lord, but to have specific times of a more deliberate and conscious focus on him.

HOW DO I PRAY?

The Catechism of the Catholic Church, in its section on Prayer, identifies different types of prayer. Many writings on prayer do the same. This prayer initiative focuses on Intercessory Prayer. We will be interceding for (praying for the needs of) our Church, state, country, etc.

Rather than be limited to a particular prayer form or discipline, our recommendation is to pray as you can. Prayer can be praying at mass or praying quietly in the chapel. Prayer also can include reading the Bible and other spiritual reading, the Divine Mercy Chaplet, the Rosary, the Jesus Prayer, the Liturgy of the Hours, or simply conversing with the Lord and "Practicing the Presence of God." If you have the gift of tongues, you can pray in tongues (Romans 8:26-27, 1 Cor. 12-14, numerous places in Acts). As mentioned above, this can be anywhere, such as a hike or a drive, at home or in Church. Prayer can be with a prayer book, or spontaneous, formal or informal, by oneself or with a group, totally still or while singing or even while exercising. It is important to "Pray as you can," in a way that you can. This practice of prayer might change from one week to another.

Prayer Power certainly can be enhanced by certain disciplines, such as fasting and/or abstaining from certain things we normally enjoy. There are different kinds and intensities of fasting and abstinence and other disciplines. Some translations tell us that "This kind can only be driven out by prayer and fasting" - Mt. 17:21.

1. PRAY FOR CONVERSION and REPENTANCE - Pray that people who do not know the Lord will know the Lord and commit their life to him.  Pray that people who already know the Lord will commit themselves to him at a deeper level.  Pray that we shift more from admirers of Jesus to totally surrendered followers of Jesus.  (i.e. Jesus is Lord of every area of our lives.  This means Jesus is Lord of our finances,  our work/businesses and work/business practices, our sexuality, our speech, and even our politics and the way we vote.)  (Pray for letting go of/deliverance from any "false gods," and a total embracing of the Lord and his ways.)

2. PRAY FOR THE CHURCH - Pray that the Church will become even more evangelistic, proclaiming that God has a plan and that he changes lives, communities, and nations.  May the Church be faithful to the Lord and the official teaching of the Church.  Pray that our pope, bishops, priests and seminarians and other ministers will be wise, encouraged and faithful.  Pray that the needs of the Church will be met.  Pray that the Church will be warm and winsome and welcoming, yet courageous and uncompromising as it proclaims a life-changing Gospel.  Pray that the government will respect faith, rather than suppress it.  Pray that we Catholics will mature more, and mentor and help others come to the Lord and grow in the faith.  Pray that the Church will deal appropriately with scandal, wrongdoing and improprieties.  Pray that if there are people in seminaries or pulpits who are not called to be there, they will be removed.  Pray that the Church will be proactive, rather than reactive, in its decisions and policies.  Pray that our Bishops will courageously proclaim and accomplish God's priorities, and not their own.  Pray that those who are lonely or hurting or broken will find God's love, care, and direction in and through his Church.

3. PRAY FOR LIFE AND FOR THE POOR - Pray that the Church will be a strong Pro Life witness, unafraid to speak out for life, for the elderly, and against abortion.  Pray that the Church will love and care for the poor.  Where there is an unhealthy dependency, may the Church encourage and facilitate the poor to get out of dependency, and be employed and occupied with meaningful work.  At the most recent gathering of the US Bishops (November, 2019), they wrote, "The threat of abortion remains our preeminent priority because it directly attacks life itself because it takes place within the sanctuary of the family and because of the number of lives destroyed."  Pray that our country will have good and fair and compassionate laws for immigration, and that we will enforce those laws.  May we be a welcoming people (and Church) to those the Lord has called here, to genuine refugees, and those who were brought here at a young age by others.  At the same time, pray that our borders will be secure  and secured.  May citizenship be a fair and orderly process.  May the churches be united in causes and purposes in which they can work together.

4. PRAY FOR BUSINESSES, JOBS, AND THE ECONOMY - Pray that the economy will thrive.  Pray that there will be good jobs for all who are able to work.  Pray that the government will stimulate, rather than frustrate, the economy. Pray that there will be resourcefulness and creativity so that rural New Mexico and the Indian Pueblos and Reservations will be able to have industry and profitable businesses.  Pray that work is respected and honored.  Pray we affirm and bring about a greater awareness that there is great dignity in honest work, and that humans should work.  (One way we are like God is when we work.)  Pray that the delicate balance between business viability and wages/living wages (for major breadwinners) will be maintained.

5. PRAY FOR THE GOVERNMENT - Pray that government leaders will put faith and policy ahead of parties and party platforms.  Pray that they will work together to legislate what is best for our citizens.  Pray that legislation may stimulate jobs and the economy, and not stifle it.  Pray that all government officials will know the Lord, and see their position as the ministry that the Lord has called them to.  Pray that they will serve with wisdom, honesty and integrity, and will be faithful to the Lord above everything else.  Pray for justice, including social justice.

6. PRAY FOR THE ARTS, ENTERTAINMENT, AND MEDIA.  Pray that the news will be fair, honest, relevant and objective.  Pray that media will encourage and communicate godly values and behavior.  Pray for Christian media to be faithful, led by the Spirit, and that the needs of the Christian media will be met.  Pray it will be a vehicle to successfully evangelize and catechize, to form and inform.  Pray that the arts and entertainment will be a vehicle for virtue, light, exhortation, and encouragement.

7. PRAY FOR FAMILIES.  Pray that husbands and wives will love each other, be kind and faithful to each other, and lay down their lives unselfishly for each other and their children.  Pray for a hedge of protection around marriages.  Pray that married couples will be blessed with children, and accept children as both a great gift and great responsibility.  Pray that they will give quality time to their children.  Pray that they can raise their children knowing the Lord, with Judeo-Christian values and a strong work ethic.   Pray for single parents and struggling parents that their needs will be met, and that they find peace, strength, guidance, support, and godly friends and godly fellowship.

8. PRAY FOR OUR SCHOOLS.  May our schools be places of godly formation and education.  May agendas of socialism, relativism and promiscuity be replaced with values and virtues that prepare young people to have a good life and build God's kingdom "on earth as it is in heaven."  May struggling Catholic schools find the finances and the students that they need in order to not only survive, but to thrive, be successful and make a strategic contribution/impact.

9. PRAY FOR BREAKING BONDAGE IN OUR STATE.  This includes substance abuse (drug and alcohol), violence (including murder and abortion), crime, prejudice and hate, the occult, and children growing up in poverty.  Pray for peace, freedom of religion, and racial reconciliation.

10. PRAY FOR CREATIVE WAYS TO BE GOOD STEWARDS OF THE ENVIRONMENT.  Pray that resources (water, gas, oil, coal, uranium, various minerals, even the wind and sun, etc.) be able to be properly, safely, and cleanly utilized.  Pray that creation be recognized as a gift from the Creator, who charges us to be good stewards, not destroying this great gift, but nurturing it.  Pray that our farmers and ranchers be able to survive and even thrive in favorable economic, environmental and governmental conditions.  Pray for the right balance between environmental concerns and protection, and using well the land and resources and minerals that this state is blessed with.

11. PRAY FOR PEACE, HARMONY, AND RECONCILIATION among people with different religious, racial, ethnic, philosophical and national backgrounds, and political views and world views.  Pray for world peace.  Pray for protection of individuals, churches, cities and other institutions during times of civil unrest.  Pray for restoration and maintenance of Law and Order.

12. PRAY FOR MORE PRAYER.  Pray that we and others will realize the gravity of this time for individuals, the Church, and our state and nation.

PRAYER INTENTIONS FOR "THIS SEASON" imagePRAYER INTENTIONS FOR "THIS SEASON" image
1. PRAY FOR THE CATHOLIC CHURCHES, DIOCESES, CONVENTS, MONASTERIES AND SCHOOLS - that they will survive the financial trials at this time.  Pray that they will continue to be life-giving, life-changing and culture changing.  Pray that we support our clergy, and that they know we love them and care about them.  (Pray that other churches will be faithful to the Gospel, and that we can work with them, where appropriate, for God's purposes, such as the life issues.)
2. PRAY THAT THE COVID-9 VIRUS WILL SOON BE GONE,  OR AT LEAST, BE PROPERLY MANAGED. Pray for remedies that already exist, whether pharmaceutical or alternative, to be accepted, allowed, and effective against this virus. Pray that there will not be mandatory vaccinations if those vaccinations are ultimately harmful. Pray that this virus will not become a political tool to manipulate people, businesses or politics. Pray that that the delicate balance between 1) protecting people's health, 2) protecting the economy, and 3) protecting us from a heavy-handed government will be achieved. (All are real in this complex situation, and all must be considered.) Pray that the Covid virus will be dealt with to cause the least harm to lives, businesses, the economy, and the elections. Pray that there is no dishonesty in reporting this illness.  Pray for our governor to make the right, albeit difficult, decisions on how to deal with the virus, and yet truly and permanently help the economy. If we need to go through this so that it won't reoccur in a devastating way, may she have the courage and integrity to implement that decision and open up schools and the economy.  Pray that the governor will understand what is an acceptable level of occurrence when all things are considered.
3. PRAY FOR THE UPCOMING ELECTIONS, that those who the Lord has called will win, and that those who are elected are faithful to the Lord. The US Conference of Catholic Bishops has identified Abortion/Pro Life as the "preeminent" issue in this election. Pray for Pro Life leadership to be strong and effective and uncompromising, and elected. Pray that our priests and other religious leaders will line up in words and actions with the Pro Life/anti abortion priority of our bishops.  Pray that New Mexico Church leaders and workers will properly prioritize what issues are most important, and will lead based upon that.
4. PRAY FOR REPENTANCE AND CONVERSION IN OUR STATE.
5. PRAY FOR RAIN. (The Scriptures indicate that sometimes nature rebels when man rebels. The correlation is not 100%, but Biblically speaking, sin and rebellion are a factor.)
6. PRAY FOR THE POOR, to find meaningful work, if they are able to work. Pray that their needs are met. Pray that their will be job training and helpful assistance to help people to have a better life. (Pray that those who are able to work will seek the Lord to give them meaningful work.)
7. PRAY FOR THE ECONOMY, that it will become strong again. Pray for all those who should be working, but are choosing not to because they are being paid not to work.
8. PRAY FOR THE YOUTH, that they meet the Lord, and learn that they are special, and that God has a unique plan and purpose for each one.
9. PRAY FOR THE CURRENT CIVIL UNREST AND THE RIOTS. Pray for protection for the poor, the shop-owners, and the police. Pray that justice will be done with regard to both the people who have been hurt and oppressed, and for those who are vandalizing, terrorrizing, and stealing. Pray that the poor will truly have ways to climb out of their poverty. Pray that discrimination will cease. Pray that all evil agendas are put down. Pray for policies that support order and respect for the Law.  Pray for enforcement of those policies.
10. PRAY THAT THE GOVERNMENT WILL RESPOND PROPERLY in its financial help during the Covid crisis and the riots. Pray that the value of the dollar will not collapse and hurt many people.

Comments on the above pictures:
1. Jesus is Praying - If Jesus needed to pray, we surely need to pray.  (Jesus prayed often.  He prayed before major decisions or events.  He prayed in order to rest with his Father.  He made it a priority to get away and pray and be with his Father.)
2. Moses Praying - Raised hands are a posture of prayer.  As long as Moses raised his hands, the Israelites won the battle.  When he was tired and lowered his hands, they would lose the battle.  Aaron and Hur came alongside of Moses and helped him to keep his hands raised.  They prayed and helped Moses to pray.  Because of their help, Israel won the battle.  In a like fashion, we need to support our church leaders and political leaders with prayer, fasting, and kind and encouraging words.  (cf. Ex 17:12-14)

Intercessory Prayer
Ask, and it will be given you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.                                                                                        -    Mt. 7:7

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well.                                                                             -    Mt. 6:33

You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.                                                                                     -     James 4:3

The prayer of a righteous man has great power in its effects. Elijah was a man of like nature with ourselves and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. Then he prayed again and the heavens gave rain, and the earth brought forth its fruit.                                                                                                                                       -   James 5:16b-18

I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in me, and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing...If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you will, and it shall be done for you. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be my disciples.                                                                                     -     John 15:5, 7-8

Trust in the Lord with all your heart,...
In all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make straight your paths.                                 -
Proverbs 3:5-6

For we have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sinning.  Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
                                                                                         -   Hebrews 4:15-16

And this is the confidence which we have in him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have obtained the request made of him.
- 1 John 5:14-15

So Peter was kept in prison; but earnest prayer for him was made to God by the church. ..behold,an angel of the Lord appeared, and a light shone in the cell. and he struck Peter on the side and woke him saying, "Get up quickly," and the chains fell off his hands. The angel said to him, “...    follow me.”   When they had passed the first and the second guard, they came to the iron gate leading into the city. It opened to them of its own accord, and they went out and passed on through one street; and immediately the angel left him.
- Acts 12:1-10

Unless the Lord builds the house,
those who build it labor in vain
.
Unless the Lord watches over the city,
the watchman stays awake in vain.

- Psalm 127:1

When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command the locust to devour the land, or send pestilence among my people,  if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.                                                                                                                                                         2 Chronicles 7:13-14

Have no anxiety about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.  And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will keep your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.                                                                                                                                                                             -           Phil. 4:6-7

Our Father, Who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name, Thy Kingdom come...
- Matthew 6:9-10

And David built ... an altar to the Lord...  So the Lord heeded supplications (prayers) for the land, and the plague was averted from Israel.                                                             - 2 Samuel 24:25

                                          Prayer for our Politicians

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all men, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life, godly and respectful in every way.
                                                            -          1 Timothy 2:1-2

But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.
                                                                     -         Jeremiah 29:7

Prayer, the faith, values and virtues are caught more than they are taught. Experts on parenting say that the parents of the house can best lead their children to be persons of prayer by: Talking to their children about the Lord and his ways, and letting the children see their own love for the Lord. The children should see that the Lord and prayer are important to the parents. Parents lead by example. Parents can tell their children about the Lord in age appropriate ways. It is important for parents to teach children to pray spontaneously, because prayer is talking to their closest friend, and other members of God's family. It is good for parents to also teach children some memorized prayers. It is important for parents to help children understand that God and prayer are relevant and interesting. God should always be honored. A house should be reverent, a domestic church.
